Involvement in research and quality improvement is essential for all trainees in medical specialities. Research knowledge and activity are compulsory features of both anaesthesic and ICM training curriculums. Levels of participation vary between trainees, from those fulfilling their requirements for ARCP and keeping abreast of current evidence to those undertaking research programmes and higher degrees.
Traditionally, few trainees have been able to complete large scale quality improvement (QI) projects or clinical trials due to training commitments and frequent rotation between posts. Trainees wishing to get involved in research have found it difficult to access information and support. Many trainees would like to get involved with research, without necessarily committing to an academic training programme.
The West Midlands Trainee Research in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Network (WMTRAIN) has been set up by a group of research and education-active trainees to facilitate trainee participation in research and high impact quality improvement projects.
Becoming a member of WMTRAIN is free and available to all West Midlands trainees in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine (including ACCS).

What can the network do for you?
- Do you have an idea for a project but don’t know how to develop it? WMTRAIN can provide peer mentors in research and quality improvement – we’ll help you get started, answer questions on developing project ideas, getting published etc.
- Develop your own “research profile”. We all have experience in research and QI – everyone has completed at least one audit. On joining WMTRAIN you will be invited to submit a summary of your research experience for our members site (this is optional). This will facilitate connection with other trainees with similar interests as well as giving ideas and inspiration.
- Do you have a quality improvement project which you’d like to deliver across the west midlands region or even further afield? Would you like to broaden the scope of an audit? Would you like to collaborate with other specialities? WMTRAIN can provide you access to our project management site to facilitate collaboration across the region.
- Do you have a great idea for improving research training or disseminating research findings? We’re always keen to here innovative ideas to deliver knowledge. Social media and the tide of open access reporting has revolutionised how we share new evidence. Gone are the days of having to spend your entire study budget to go to the annual conference for the latest updates!
